Throughout much of the history of cartography, maps were engraved on metal and printed on paper. We have access to the prints, but we rarely see the metal matrix.
"Double-Edged" starts from the gores, the spindle-shaped strips cut to sheathe a desktop globe, and holds them in the state that precedes the sphere, when the world is still a flat, sliced surface, incapable of closing in on itself.
Seven steel gores are etched with acid, the grid of meridians and parallels and the outlines of the continents opened as grooves across a surface overtaken by oxidation. The South American gore is the only one without rust: sharpened along its entire perimeter and sanded down to bare metal, it is a double-edged blade among the other six.
The work suspends two processes midway: the matrix that never becomes a print, and the gore that never becomes a globe. What remains is the metal, the acid, and the rust advancing as a kind of second map over the first.
